Run the Experiments (26) – Final Confrontation
(December 21st, 2017) Here's a new episode of Lab Times' serialised crime story.
It was a sunny Friday morning but that wasn’t the best thing about this day. Charlotte had been working on her manuscript all week and it was almost ready for submission. One last image check and some proof-reading. The USB stick, a birthday present from her mum, had served her well. In just a few minutes, she would be joining the others in the cafeteria.
As she put on her jacket, the phone rang. The reception called to tell her that a man wanted to see her. She didn't catch his name.
Must be the repairman, Charlotte thought. It was about time he turned up. Unperturbed, Charlotte headed into the hallway to greet the man and show him to the centrifuge room.
Striding down the hallway was an apparition she had not expected. Instead of the repairman, there came a furious-looking Prof Bernard, whose very appearance and resolute tread paralysed her with fear.
“Hello, Ms Whitefield, you didn't expect to see me here, did you?”
Charlotte was so perplexed; she couldn't utter a word.
“Where is it? Give it to me!” He growled.
As her instincts kicked in, all Charlotte could think about was escaping. She turned around and tried to run but it was too late. Bernard, quick as flash, grabbed her wrist.
Charlotte tried to break away, “Let go of me,” she screamed, in vain.
Bernard prised the USB stick out of her clenched fist and gazed at it – a victorious smile crept across his face. Triumphantly, he marched to the exit, leaving Charlotte crumpled on the floor clutching her wrist in agony.
She was devastated.
